Whether it is beef or dairy it is important to grow calves efficiently to meet slaughter weights sooner. Standard target weights of pre weaning weights are greater than >0.7kg/day and post weaning DLWG of >0.8kg/day - >1.0kg/day for dairy or beef respectively.
Calves have a more efficient feed conversion ratio pre-puberty; therefore, greater growth rates are seen earlier on for the same dry matter intake. So, it is important to monitor growth rates in calves to ensure they’re meeting their targets and make the best use of nutrition resources early in life.
Growth rates <0.7kg/day can indicate issues in colostrum management, diseases such as pneumonia or scour, insufficient energy intake or stressors. There are multiple factors that can impact growth rates, and it is crucial to diagnose the reasons for reduced growth rates on your farm working alongside your vet and nutritionist.
Ideally live weight will be measured using weigh scales however the consistent use of a weigh tape and wither stick will provide target indications. Any form of measurement device must be calibrated regularly and checked for accuracy. Calculating DLWG can be done by using the following equation: DLWG (kg/day) = (current weight – previous weight) /age in days.
Weighing calves regularly will provide the clearest picture of growth efficiency. We can monitor individuals and batches to ensure we are performing to desired targets. It is important we continue to adjust targets and reduce days to slaughter and meet weight targets sooner. In order to reduce costs per head and overall days on farm.

2 months - 80-90kg (Weaned weight)
3 months – 120kg
9 months – 326kg (55%-60% slaughter weight)
21 months – 570-600kg (slaughter weight)
