Top 3 Autumn Cereal Seed Varieties for 2024

BAMFORD- UKFM GROUP 3- BISCUIT WHEATS - NEW!

Joining the list at the top, Elsoms’ new wheat Bamford looks to reignite the soft wheat sector.

With a fantastic disease package and excellent performance across different soil types, it’s not hard to see why it performs across the UK. Bamford will be hugely popular this autumn with not only its yield but also its ability to be marketed for feed, biscuit, distilling or export, offering numerous potential premiums. Vigorous out of the ground, Bamford is comparable to the likes of Extase, offering grass weed competition in the autumn. Breeder claims of “improved” nitrogen efficiency is an interesting point when input costs are now under more scrutiny than ever.

LG BEOWULF- UKFM GROUP 4 – FEED WHEAT (HARD)- NEW!

A new hard wheat from LG, Beowulf, joins as the joint top-yielding variety. As expected, it performs fantastically across soil types, regions and drilling
slots. The disease ratings speak for itself with good resistances across the board. The slight downside from this comes in the form of a slightly later maturity
as its disease package keeps it greener for longer. Its growing habit is fairly erect, so expect a fairly even crop, with even maturity. A good specific weight is an improvement on some of the newer varieties of late. LG Beowulf will be a sell-out in its first year, so order early to avoid disappointment.

LG CAPITOL- FEED BARLEY

A sister variety to LG Caravelle both in terms of parents and yield. The disease package is solid with ratings matching well alongside other recommended varieties.

It’s stiff strawed with very good performance on both light and heavy soils. If you are growing Caravelle this year but are looking for improved straw strength Capitol is one to grow.

Danny was born on a small arable farm in Suffolk ensuring agriculture was big part of his childhood. Going on to study Agriculture with Crop Management at Harper Adams University he graduated with a 2:1 in 2019. During his time at university Danny completed an 18-month industrial placement with the plant breeder KWS UK. This gave Danny fantastic exposure to plant breeding, variety selection and trial work which he now uses this knowledge to help Wynnstay farmers.

After graduating Danny spent some time working as a trials agronomist further expanding his knowledge on agro-chemicals, fertilisers, and varieties.

Since joining Wynnstay in 2021 Danny has several roles inside Wynnstay which include working closely with plant breeders ensuring the best varieties are available to Wynnstay farmers, working alongside our production team and seed growers to ensure only the highest quality seed is processed at Wynnstay. Lastly, he designs and delivers training to our sales reps giving the most up to date product knowledge to the Wynnstay team.
