A traditional variety that produces heavy crops of large tasty buttons from early autumn. Plants can be picked over a long period. Prefers rich, well drained, fertile soil.

Sow outdoors in March to April

In a prepared seed bed
Sow thinly in rows of 15cm (6in) apart
Firm gently and keep moist
When 10-15cm (4-6in) tall transplant to final position with 60cm (24in) between plants and rows
Firm plants in well
Harvest in September to December
Harvest sprouts from the bottom of the stem upwards

Sow indoors in February to March

In trays of seed compost
Sow thinly, cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
Firm gently and keep moist
Cover tray with glass, polythene or propagator lid
Keep at approx 13°C
Seedling appear at 14-21 days
Remove cover when seedlings appear
When large enough transplant 5cm (2in) apart in trays
Stand outside for a few days May to June (avoid frost)
Transplant to April to May to final position with 60cm (24in) between plants and rows
Harvest in September to December
