An 'ageless' favourite producing thick, medium length, tender stems with broad leaves. A very hardy and reliable variety of Scottish origin, introduced in 1834! Prefers rich, well drained soil.

Sow outdoors in March to April

  • In a prepared seed bed
  • Sow thinly in rows 20cm (8in) apart
  • Cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
  • Firm gently and keep moist
  • When 12cm tall transplant to growing position into holes 15cm (6in) apart with 30cm (12in) between rows
  • Water but do not firm plants in
  • Harvest in October to March
  • Earth up the stems in autumn for extra whiteness

Sow indoors in January to February

  • In trays of seed compost
  • Sow thinly, cover with 1.5cm of compost
  • Firm gently and keep moist
  • Cover tray with glass or polythene
  • Keep at approx 15°C (60°F)
  • Remove cover when seedlings appear
  • When large enough transplant 5cm (2in) apart in trays
  • Stand outside for a few days late May (avoid frost)
  • When 12cm tall transplant to growing position into holes 15cm (6in) apart with 30cm (12in) between rows
  • Harvest in October to March
  • Earth up the stems in autumn for extra whiteness
