The deliciously aromatic leaves are a wonderful accompaniment to numerous meat and vegetable dishes. Often evergreen, it also makes a beautiful edging and container plant.
- Sow in trays of seed compost
- Sow thinly, cover witha fine layer of compost
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Cover tray with glass, polythene or propagator lid
- Keep at approx 15-20°C (60-68°F)
- Seedling appear 14-28 days
- Remove cover when seedlings appear
- When large enough transplant 5cm (2in) apart in trays
- Stand outside for a few days (avoid frost)
- Then transplant 25cm (10in) apart in final position
- Prefers a sunny position and well drained soil
- Keep moist and weed free
- Harvest March to November
- Pick the leaves as required
- Clothe protection in autumn will give longer cropping
