Focus on Calves

Welcome to our 10th edition of the Focus on Calves

A new year faced with new market challenges and new additions to the calf and youngstock team.

I would like to introduce a familiar face to Wynnstay, Caitlin Jones who joined earlier in the year and will be covering North and Mid Wales. We welcome both Hannah Glyn–Jones and Lily-Ann Pardoe to the calf team covering Midlands North and Midlands South, please see the map for individual areas.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank Laura Monk and Hannah Braithwaite for their time within the Youngstock team and wish them good luck as they transition to the Wynnstay sales team. Finally, we would like to congratulate Jess and James on their third child, Teddy Yeomans, and look forward to welcoming Jess back to the team next year.

Calf health has been a key focus throughout the year, showcased through our calf roadshows, on-farm collaborated events, our monthly newsletters and in this year’s Focus On Calves publication. On page 4, Caitlin explores the benefits and practicality of prolonged colostrum feeding. Feeding more milk is discussed throughout the publication on pages 6,7 and 9 and continues to discuss the associated health benefits and future performance and productivity we can influence in the milk feeding phase.

As a calf team, we have gained our Youngstock Signals qualification, on page 25 Hannah explores the guidelines and benefits, it has to calf health and welfare, similar to cow signals. We have reviewed our Start’n’Wean formula, to increase early intakes and drive rumen development, please look on page 14 to see our new and improved formula and make sure you enter our prize draw towards the back of the publication where you can win a pallet!

Thank you to everyone who participated and sent images in for our photo competition, we loved seeing them and hope you agree as they feature throughout this publication.

I hope you enjoy this year’s edition; it is packed with some really great information that can be easily influenced on farm.

Please do not hesitate a member of our calf and youngstock team if you would like any additional information on articles or products.
