Welcome to our first edition of the Focus on Lambs
The joint specialist teams within Wynnstay, with the addition of industry experts have collaborated on the first edition of focus on lambs. This publication has been born through the very informative Focus on Calves annual publication. We hope you enjoy this publication and gives added knowledge and tools throughout lambing season 23/24. As we approach the busy lambing period, we can look back on the challenges the industry has faced this year, including cost of production, and pressing weather events.
Our first edition of Focus on Lambs, highlights discussions on managing expecting ewes and rearing lambs. Our specialists’ teams are never too far away to discuss your youngstock queries, please see page 2 for contact details. Rearing orphan lambs can often be considered as additional labour and increased production costs, however, on page 16, Bryn outlines how lamb crops and profits can be raised through effective orphan rearing systems.
Ewe and lamb health is a key focus to reduce mortality and morbidity, on page 6 Lucy has explored a variety of different diseases common during lambing time and practical methods of prevention. On page 11, the importance of weighing lambs is emphasised, with the ability to monitor growth rates and select stock for different end routes being key drivers for this activity.
We hope you enjoy the first edition of Focus on Lambs, and we encourage you to participate in our photo competition, for a chance to feature in our next edition of the publication!
