A very hardy, cold tolerant, nutritious vegetable that produces a heavy crop of succulent purple spears when little else is available in the garden. Prefers fertile, moisture retentive soil

Sow outdoors in March to May

  • In a prepared seed bed
  • Sow thinly in rows of 25cm (10in) apart
  • Cover lightly with 1.5cm of fine soil
  • Firm gently and keep moist
  • Seedlings appear at 14-21 days
  • When 10cm (4in) tall transplant to final position with 60cm (2ft) between plants and rows
  • Firm plants in well
  • Harvest in February to May
  • Cut shoots when 15cm (6in) long
  • Pick young shoots regularly to encourage further cropping

Sow indoors in March to May

  • In trays of seed compost
  • Sow thinly, cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
  • Firm gently and keep moist
  • Cover tray with glass, polythene or propagator lid
  • Keep at approx 13°C
  • Seedling appear at 14-21 days
  • Remove cover when seedlings appear
  • When large enough transplant 5cm (2in) apart in trays
  • Stand outside for a few days May to June (avoid frost)
  • Transplant to final position with 60cm (2ft) between plants and rows
  • Harvest in February to May
  • Cut shoots when 15cm (6in) long
  • Pick young shoots regularly to encourage further cropping
