A very hardy, cold tolerant, nutritious vegetable that produces a heavy crop of succulent purple spears when little else is available in the garden. Prefers fertile, moisture retentive soil
Sow outdoors in March to May
- In a prepared seed bed
- Sow thinly in rows of 25cm (10in) apart
- Cover lightly with 1.5cm of fine soil
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Seedlings appear at 14-21 days
- When 10cm (4in) tall transplant to final position with 60cm (2ft) between plants and rows
- Firm plants in well
- Harvest in February to May
- Cut shoots when 15cm (6in) long
- Pick young shoots regularly to encourage further cropping
Sow indoors in March to May
- In trays of seed compost
- Sow thinly, cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Cover tray with glass, polythene or propagator lid
- Keep at approx 13°C
- Seedling appear at 14-21 days
- Remove cover when seedlings appear
- When large enough transplant 5cm (2in) apart in trays
- Stand outside for a few days May to June (avoid frost)
- Transplant to final position with 60cm (2ft) between plants and rows
- Harvest in February to May
- Cut shoots when 15cm (6in) long
- Pick young shoots regularly to encourage further cropping
