Large crops of taste, succulent leaves which can be used as a substitute for spinach. A long standing variety, it has excellent bolt resistance during hot weather. Performs well in most fertile soils.

Sow outdoors in March to July

  • In prepared seed bed
  • Sow thinly in rows 40cm (16in) apart
  • Cover with 2.5cm of fine soil
  • Firm gently and keep moist
  • Seedling appear 7-21 days
  • When large enough thin to 15cm (6in) apart
  • Pick regularly, a few leaves at a time, do not strip plants completely
  • Harvest in June to October
  • Protect with clothes in cold weather from October onwards for later harvests.
  • Plants often survive the winter providing further crops the following year
  • Pinch centre shoots back to prolong harvest period
