Large crops of taste, succulent leaves which can be used as a substitute for spinach. A long standing variety, it has excellent bolt resistance during hot weather. Performs well in most fertile soils.
Sow outdoors in March to July
- In prepared seed bed
- Sow thinly in rows 40cm (16in) apart
- Cover with 2.5cm of fine soil
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Seedling appear 7-21 days
- When large enough thin to 15cm (6in) apart
- Pick regularly, a few leaves at a time, do not strip plants completely
- Harvest in June to October
- Protect with clothes in cold weather from October onwards for later harvests.
- Plants often survive the winter providing further crops the following year
- Pinch centre shoots back to prolong harvest period
