Foreword

Looking to spring 2023, I must first reflect on what’s happened and where we are today. Cost increases have been a big issue for farming economics, and they look set to remain a key concern during 2023. Profits were generally good for agriculture, but the forecast is sobering. Higher costs in some areas seem permanent, and there is no sign that energy prices are going to fall quickly back to past levels. In other areas, such as the wage rates for seasonal workers, the 15% increase in 2022 is irreversible. There will be inflationary pressure on many other inputs as businesses try and keep up with inflation. In England, the Agricultural Transition saw the BPS cut by at least 20% in 2022. Although the money is to be recovered through other schemes, it is not clear how it is all going to be available with the gradual rollout of ELMs. In Wales, BPS continues to be supported by Government, however guidance notes for Growing for the Environment Scheme have been published, part of the transitions to sustainable farming support, and these future financials will need monitoring. Wynnstay’s specialists are working closely with those in Policy to make sure we can advise both English and Welsh customers as these become clearer.
