Known for its excellent favour, this winter cropping variety has round, flattish heads of densely packeted leaves. Can also be harvested eariler as young and tender 'greens'. Prefers well cultivated soil
Sow outdoors in April to June
- In a prepared seed bed
- Sow thinly in rows 23cm (9in) apart
- Cover lightly with 1.5cm of fine soil
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Seedlings appear 7-21 days
- When 5-6 leaves have formed transplant to final position with 60cm (2ft) between plants and rows
- Firm plants in well
- Harvest in December to March
- Avoid diseases such as club root by rotating brassica crops yearly
Sow indoors in March to May
- In trays of seed compost
- Sow thinly, cover with 1.5cm of firm soil
- Firm gently and keep at approx 13°C
- Remove cover when seedlings appear
- When large enonugh transplant 5cm (2in) apart in trays
- Stand outside for a few days May to June (avoid frost)
- Transplant to final position with 60cm (2ft) between plants and rows
- Keep moist and weed free
- Harvest in December to March
- Avoid diseases such as club root by rotating brassica crops yearly
