An established and popular garden variety that produces large white heads, it is well suited to successional and harvesting over a long period. Prefers fertile, moisture retentive soil.
Sow outdoors in March to June or September to October
- In a prepared seed bed March to May
- Sow thinly, cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
- Firm gently and keep moist
- For continuous crops sow every 2-3 weeks
- When Large enough transplant to final position with 60cm (2ft) between plants and rows
- Firm plants in well
- Protect early and late (overwinter) sowings with clothes
- Harvest in June to October
- Protect curds from direct sunlight by folding in the leaves
Sow indoors in January to March
- In trays of seed compost
- Sow thinly, cover with 1.5cm of firm soil
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Cover tray with glass, polythene or propagator lid
- Keep at approx 13°C
- Seedling appear at 14-28 days
- Remove cover when seedlings appear
- When large enough transplant 5cm (2in) apart in trays
- Stand outside for a few days May to June (avoid frost)
- Transplant to final position with 60cm (2ft) between plants and rows
- Keep moist and weed free
- Harvest in June to October
- Protect curds from direct sunlight by folding in the leaves
