A very hardy, great tasting and nutritious vegetable with tightly curled leaves providing fresh 'greens' throughout the winter. Also know as 'Borecole'. Prefers rich well drained soil.
Sow outdoors in March to May
- In a prepared seed bed
- Sow thinly in rows 23cm (9in) apart
- Cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Seedling appear at 14-28 days
- When 5-6 leaves have formed transplant to final position with 45cm (18in) between plants and rows
- Firm plants in well
- Keep moist and weed free
- Protect early sowing with clothes
- Harvest in September to March
- Pick a few leaves from each plant
- Avoid disease such as club root by rotating brassica crops yearly
Sow indoors in March to May
- In trays of seed compost
- Sow thinly, cover with a fine layer of compost
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Cover tray with glass or polythene
- Keep at approx 10-15°C (50-60°F)
- Remove cover when seedlings appear
- When large enough transplant singly to 5cm (2in) apart in trays
- Stand outside for a few days late May (avoid frost)
- Transplant to final position with 45cm (18in) between plants and rows
- Keep moist and weed free
- Harvest in September to March
- Pick a few leaves from each plant
- Avoid disease such as club root by rotating brassica crops yearly
