A popular, traditional cos variety with large succulent leaves that wrap protectively around a crisp, dense heart. Slow to bolt, it is ideal for spring as well as autumn sowing. Prefers rich, well drained soil.
Sow outdoors in March to May and September to October
- In a prepared seed bed
- Sow thinly in rows 30cm (12in) apart
- Cover with 2.5cm of fine soil
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Seedling appear 7-14 days
- For continuous crops sow every 2-3 weeks
- When large enough thin to 25cm (10in) apart.
- Keep moist and weed free
- Protect early sowing's with clothes and later sowing's to over-winter
- Harvest in May to October for spring sowing
- Harvest in April to May for autumn sowing
- For maximum 'freshness' cut lettuces in the morning or evening
