A popular variety for long, dark green striped fruits with firm texture and excellent flavour. Produces plentiful crops, which can also be picked as courgettes. Prefers rich, well drained soil.
Sow outdoors in May or April under clothes
- In a prepared seed bed
- Sow 2 seeds per position, 90cm (3ft) apart
- Cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
- Firm gently and keep moist
- thin to one strong seedling per position
- Harvest in July to October
- Pick regularly to encourage cropping
- Young leaves, flowers and shoot tips are also delicious cooked
Sow indoors in March to May
- In trays of seed compost
- Sow singly into a pot edgeways into the compost
- Cover with 1.5cm of compost
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Cover tray with glass or polythene
- Keep at approx 15-20°C (60-68°F)
- Seedling appear at 7 to 14 days
- Remove cover when seedlings appear
- At 5-6 leaf stage, stand outside for a few days late May (avoid frost)
- Transplant 90cm (3ft) apart in growing position
- Harvest in July to October
- Pick regularly to encourage cropping
- Young leaves, flowers and shoot tips are also delicious cooked
