A classic variety which is still popular for its high yields of firm, globe shaped onions with succulent white flesh and a wonderful mild flavour. Prefers rich, well drained soil.
Sow outdoors in March to April
- In a prepared seed bed
- Sow thinly in rows 30cm (12in) apart
- Cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
- Firm gently and keep moist
- When large enough thin to 5cm (2in) apart
- Later thin to 20cm (8in) apart, use thinnings for salads or transplanting
- Harvest in August to September
- Store in a cool dry area
- When tops turn yellow bend them over to assist ripening
Sow indoors in January to February
- In trays of seed compost
- Sow thinly, cover with 1.5cm of compost
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Cover tray with glass or polythene
- Keep at approx 10-15°C (50-60°F)
- Seedling appear at 14 to 28 days
- Remove cover when seedlings appear
- When large enough transplant 5cm (2in) apart in trays
- Stand outside for a few days late May (avoid frost)
- Transplant 20cm (8in) apart in growing position
- Harvest in August to September
- Store in a cool dry area
- When tops turn yellow bend them over to assit ripening
