A classic variety which is still popular for its high yields of firm, globe shaped onions with succulent white flesh and a wonderful mild flavour. Prefers rich, well drained soil.

Sow outdoors in March to April

  • In a prepared seed bed
  • Sow thinly in rows 30cm (12in) apart
  • Cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
  • Firm gently and keep moist
  • When large enough thin to 5cm (2in) apart
  • Later thin to 20cm (8in) apart, use thinnings for salads or transplanting
  • Harvest in August to September
  • Store in a cool dry area
  • When tops turn yellow bend them over to assist ripening

Sow indoors in January to February

  • In trays of seed compost
  • Sow thinly, cover with 1.5cm of compost
  • Firm gently and keep moist
  • Cover tray with glass or polythene
  • Keep at approx 10-15°C (50-60°F)
  • Seedling appear at 14 to 28 days
  • Remove cover when seedlings appear
  • When large enough transplant 5cm (2in) apart in trays
  • Stand outside for a few days late May (avoid frost)
  • Transplant 20cm (8in) apart in growing position
  • Harvest in August to September
  • Store in a cool dry area
  • When tops turn yellow bend them over to assit ripening
