Large rounded fruits with thick wall of sweet tasting flesh and attractive, bright orange skin. Lots of fun for making Halloween lanterns, hearty soups and pies. Prefers rich well drained soil.
Sow outdoors in March to May
- In a well prepared seed bed
- Sow 2 seeds per position, 120cm (4ft) apart
- Cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Thin to one strong seedling per position
- Keep well watered and weed free
- Harvest in September to November
- Apply a liquid feed every 2 weeks when fruit begins to swell
Sow indoors in May
- In pots of seed compost
- sow singly into a pot edgeways into the compost
- Cover with 1.5cm of compost
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Cover tray with glass or polythene
- Keep at approx 15-20°C (60-68°F)
- Seedlings appear at 7-21 days
- Remove cover when seedlings appear
- At 5-6 leaf stage, stand outside for a few days (avoid frosts)
- Transplant 120cm (4ft) apart in growing position
- Keep moist and weed free
- Harvest in September to November
- Apply a liquid feed every 2 weeks when fruit begins to swell
