The thick dark green leaves are packed with goodness and can be eaten as baby leaves in salads or mature plants can be steamed and used in cooking. Prefers moist fertile soil.

Sow outdoors in February to June

  • In prepared seed bed
  • Sow thinly in rows 30cm (12in) apart for mature plants
  • For baby leaves sow in rows 15cm (6in) apart
  • Cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
  • Firm gently and keep moist
  • Seedling appear 7-14 days
  • For continuous crops sow every 2-3 weeks
  • When large enough thin to 7.5cm (3in) apart for baby leaves
  • For mature plants thin to final position of 15cm (6in)
  • Keep moist and weed free
  • Harvest in April to August
  • For individual baby leaves, pick as required, a few from each plant
  • They will regrow for 3 to 4 cuts
  • Harvest mature plants once they have developed
  • Keep plants well watered, especially during hot, dry spells
