Fast growing, vigorous plants producing large squashes with long thick necks and a small seed cavity for less waste and more firm, sweet tasting orange flesh. Prefers rich well drained soil.
Sow outdoors in March to May
- In a well prepared seed bed
- Sow 2 seeds per position, 90cm (3ft) apart
- Cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Thin to one strong seedling per position
- Keep well watered and weed free
- Harvest in September to November
- Apply a liquid feed every 2 weeks when fruit begins to swell
Sow indoors in May
- In pots of seed compost
- sow singly into a pot edgeways into the compost
- Cover with 1.5cm of compost
- Firm gently and keep moist
- Cover tray with glass or polythene
- Keep at approx 15-20°C (60-68°F)
- Seedlings appear at 7-21 days
- Remove cover when seedlings appear
- At 5-6 leaf stage, stand outside for a few days (avoid frosts)
- Transplant 90cm (3ft) apart in growing position
- Keep moist and weed free
- Harvest in August to October
- Apply a liquid feed every 2 weeks when fruit begins to swell
