A new variety in 2023, RAGT Grouse is the next step in BYVD resistance. It has a Santiago genetic background, so good yield potential and disease resistance. It has a slow speed of development, high tillering and prostate growth habit making it suitable for mid-September sowing when BYDV risk is at its highest. It is a good-looking wheat with excellent tiller retention that lends itself to a denser canopy, and the breeder tells us that ear fertility is good. The variety is not a one trick pony, but the breeders resistance claims to the common strains of BYDV, greatly simplifies crop management, removing the need to monitor and control aphid populations with foliar-applied insecticide sprays while benefiting the environment.
