Lighting’s significance in calf housing with youngstock signals

The basic requirements of a calf can be condensed into seven key words. These combine to form the points on the YoungStock Signals diamond. All six points need to be satisfied in order to achieve optimum health, welfare and production. This is the overarching key point of the YoungStock Signals diamond.

Healthy calves MUST have:

  1. Space for feed
  2. Clean, fresh water
  3. Light – more light = more growth, health and labour quality
  4. Fresh air (air replacement 3.5-4x/hr)
  5. Plenty of fresh straw to rest (nest score 3); dry bedding (kneel test)
  6. More space, 2.5m2 minimum for milk calves; 3.5m2 for weaned calves

The importance of lighting

This month we are focussing on the third point – Light; more light = more growth, health and labour quality.

There is no clear scientific evidence about optimal regimes for calves. However, we know that calf housing requires a minimum of 50 Lux of artificial light. This can be supplemented with natural light to achieve the required 200 Lux for daily calf checks.

We also know that natural lighting should be provided by 10% of the roof area. It is important that calves in buildings overnight should be given an appropriate period of rest from artificial light.

Following the above 6 basic requirements is vital for rearing healthy calves. Be observant, and read the signs to satisfy your youngstock’s needs.
