Enhancing Crop Yield: A Guide To Effective Nutrient Management Planning

Does a Nutrient Management Plan only focus on fertiliser usage?

The plan considers much more than just fertiliser. We start by looking at the soil, then consider the crop’s nutrient requirements and the available nutrients on the farm, such as slurry and farmyard manure. Once that has been considered, it looks at what bought-in requirements may be needed.

Do I need a Nutrient Management Plan?

If you are in a NVZ you require a nutrient management plan to be compliant. However, even outside NVZ’s, nutrient management plans are valuable to help target nutrient applications more effectively to help maximise crop potential efficiently.

What is involved in producing a Nutrient Management Plan?

The first step in nutrient management planning is to assess the health of your soil. This involves soil testing to determine its nutrient content and pH levels. Understanding your soil’s current state is essential for making informed decisions about nutrient applications. Soil tests provide valuable information on which nutrients are deficient and need supplementation.

These soil samples are then analysed to determine existing nutrient levels, pH and other relevant soil properties. This information forms the basis for nutrient management recommendations, which specify the timing, method and rates of fertiliser application.

Regular monitoring of soil and crop nutrient status helps in making necessary adjustments to the nutrient management plan as needed to account for changing conditions.

How can I get my plan?

Once the plan has been completed, it will be provided to you in a folder that you can have on hand should you get an inspection.

Nutrient management planning is a science that combines knowledge of crop nutrient requirements, soil health, and environmental responsibility. By creating a well-informed and flexible nutrient management plan, you can optimise crop yield, reduce waste, and protect the environment. Embracing these practices is not only good for your farm's success but also for the sustainability of agriculture as a whole.
