Which is more suitable for your horse? Spillers Alfalfa-Pro Fibre vs Ulca Fibre

Which is more suitable for your horse? Spillers Alfalfa-Pro Fibre vs Ulca Fibre

Recently, Spillers introduced Ulca Fibre, a new fibre feed which has been proven to help support horses prone to gastric ulcers following veterinary treatment*. So which of these two British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) EGUS approved fibres is most suitable for your horse – Ulca Fibre or Spillers Alfalfa-Pro Fibre 20kg?

Both products

  •  Include soft short chopped alfalfa to extend eating time and provide a natural buffer to stomach acid.
  •  Are low in starch and sugar to support digestive health and reduce the risk of excitability.
  • Are high in oil for coat shine & slow release energy to fuel optimum condition and performance.
  • Are high in vitamin E, the most important antioxidant to support immune and muscle health.
  • Are high in quality protein including lysine to support muscle development and performance.
  •  Are BETA EGUS approved

So, what's the difference?

Spillers Ulca Fibre contains a comprehensive blend of added vitamins and minerals meaning it can be fed as a full or partial replacement for compound feed. The chelated copper, zinc and manganese in the Ulca Fibre blend help to maximise absorption. With the exception of vitamin E, Spillers Alfalfa-Pro Fibre does not contain added vitamins and minerals making it ideal for feeding alongside the recommended ration of an appropriate compound feed or balancer.

Why are fibre feeds important?

Studies taken part on behalf of Spillers have shown that providing feeding straw as the sole forage supply increases the risk of gastric ulcers, therefore it should only be used for around 30% of their total daily forage ration.

Using a fibre feed such as Spillers Ulca Fibre or Spillers Alfalfa-Pro Fibre adds forage into the feed to extend feeding time and provide a different source of fibre. It also provides needed calories with low starch and sugar to reduce risk of exciteability.
